Winlock
FFA
The Winlock FFA Chapter has been devoted to
improving student lives since 1935. It has been accomplishing this
thru premier leadership, personal growth, and career success. The
chapter is based at
Winlock
High
School in
Winlock,
WA
. The chapter is composed of 91
middle school and high school students. The students have many
opportunities in which they can help fulfill the goals of the
chapter.
The first opportunity members have is to participate in local
chapter activities. These activities include chapter meetings;
Meetings in the evening where members have the opportunity to
discuss and vote on what activities they will organize in the month
to come, and chemically free nights; Fun nights which follow our
meetings to expose member to exciting activities without the
presence of drugs and alcohol. The students also have many
opportunities to help out their community. Some of the community
devolvement activities members participate in are; Walk n’ Knock,
Grandparent’s Day (students serve grandparents and their
grandchildren lunch at the elementary school), and assisting the
firemen with their Thanksgiving Turkey Bingo.
Since Winlock is a rural area in southern
Lewis
County
, most of
our members have agriculture related projects, which we called
Supervised Agricultural Experience Project (SAEP). SAEPs are broken
down into two major groups: entrepreneurship; the student owns the
animal or the business, and placement; the student works for an
employer. These SAEPs, which members participate in, range from
large animal breeding and marketing to outdoor recreation. Each
spring members have the chance to apply for rewards corresponding to
their project. This year we have two students who have been selected
as state finalists in their SAEPs, Andrew Lynch in Agricultural
Sales Placement, and Kara Givens in Outdoor Recreation
Placement.
Career Devolvement Events (CDEs) enable members to learn
skills that they can use later in life. These competitions allow
students to show what skills they are learning through their
agricultural programs. The students can compete in leadership CDEs
that test skill necessary for the business world, or they can
compete in technical CDE’s which test their skills for a specific
career field, such as Food Sciences or Soil Testing. At Winlock we
try to emphasize participation in CDEs. At state we will have
students participating in Meats Evaluation, Food Sciences,
Extemporaneous Speaking, and 1st Year Greenhand.
As we look to the future, we hope we can continue to provide
the students of our high school and middle school the opportunities
for personal growth, premier leadership, and career success. We
cannot do this alone, and we thank you for your support to us and
hope you will continue to give us your support in order to achieve
our goals and make our nation a better place.
